I sideswiped a rock on Naches trail in WA on Saturday. Broke off the valve stem and thrashed my wheel a bit. New valve stem possible or is this a new TPMS sensor?

I had thought new sensor was required here, but in looking last night online, I see “sensor valve service kits” for these metal stem’d sensors on the early Defenders. Not that it really matters... I’m more curious than anything.

BTW. Good reason to ditch these crapola metal stems and go with the rubber ones that they started using in the later ones.

Not sure if the something comparable can be one with the metal stems like you have but this video shows a nifty repair of a rubber stem. Something I think I will add to my tire repair kit. It would have been fun to do a trailside fix and re-bead that sucker. I was sad we couldn't fix it there and then. TPMS can always be added later on.

 

Would a Colby valve steam kit have helped, for an on trail fix?

Maybe I’m not really sure how these stupid metal TPMS valve stems actually work. I was watching videos of the Colby valves and the issue I see is that the metal TPMS valve body is lodged in there, it’s bolted on from the back.

I did peel back the debeaded tire today during the car wash -- and the TPMS sensor is broken off and rattling around in the bottom of the tire. I must have driven on it. So pretty sure I need a new one anyway so my post here is a bit irrelevant now.

 

Not sure if it is broken off, they clip in place. . Did remove 5 when painting my steelies, so that's how I know.

 

For those off-roading and wishing to avoid the issues of a broken off TPMS valve stem in the bush, I would replace them with these rubber stemmed ones from TPMS.com. Also a good backup to have the Colby emergency replacements in your emergency kit.
