I'm pretty sure if you do an Advanced Search you will find an existing thread about this. In that thread someone had a picture of one of those steps that punched into the door pilar. I'm kinda not a fan. I've seen plenty of those ladders that compress up that people store in the boot. I'd recommend that way before the door steps. Personally, I just jump up onto the tire for most of my rooftop needs.

The picture you refer to of one of the steps punching into the door pillar, was that of a Defender? I have seen similar pics of it denting lesser built vehicles, but when using mine there is zero flex. Our Defenders are very sturdily built and I don’t expect any problems with the use of the step. Agreed, it may not be the universal solution for all and I have also considered the collapsible ladder but went with the step for ease of use, space, and fast deployment. But whatever works for each person’s application is the best choice in the end.
