That's BS. If the truck is under warrantee then that defective part is. His "logic" would apply to every part. He sounds lazy. I'd go right to the service manager then the dealership owner.
TBH, I was stacking some things on it when they snapped; it’s just a security cover and is decidedly NOT load bearing. That said, my wife’s IPace has a rigid cargo cover but very little clearance to put anything on it because of the slope of the rear window.
$500?!? Like everything in life: someone's love is another person's trash. I don't use mine at all. I keep it squirreled away next to all the other Defender bits & parts I've replaced, pulled off, or don't want to toss. At that price I'm tempted to e-bay it! I have this vision of keeping it for the next decade until I get rid of the thing, but at that price... The back of my Defender is full of a bunch of gear & storage boxes all covered with an old Saltillo blanket (because I think it looks cooler).
Old thread I know, but in case your cover is so thrashed that the DIY repair isn't going to fix it, there are some overseas knockoff covers that are WAAAAYYYYY cheaper than a $500 OEM one!
(These may very well be OEM from a supplier overseas that is selling extra production runs out of contract/direct to consumer but you can never be totally sure with from from China, YMMV/Buyer Beware)
