Default Crossbeam Rattle

Took delivery of my 110 in early January.

In the past month, a very annoying rattle has developed from beneath the leather on the lower left crossbeam from the driver's seat (left hand drive).

The rattle sounds like one of those rain sticks they sold at the sharper image years ago or kind of like a bunch of leaves rustling in the wind. I can get the rattle to stop if I push on the leather padding on the crossbeam.

Any speed is enough to produce the noise.

Does anyone else have any experience with this and maybe have a solution to it?

I'm trying to avoid bringing this in to the dealer.

Thanks.

Yes, I had it too. I traced my squeaking noise to the leather covered trim pieces at the far left side of the dashboard. Push on those trim pieces and the noise stops.

For the rounded trim piece under the storage tray, remove the 4 grab handle torx bolts and grab handle, then remove one small black torx screw that comes in from the left side of the trim piece. Then just pull it off. There are 4 spring clips that attach it. I lined the inside with black adhesive felt and snapped it back on.

For the trim piece below the air vent, you need to remove the left grab handle again. Then look for a small black torx screw that comes in from the left into the top rounded leather piece that runs across the top of the dash. Then above the left storage tray is a black plastic piece. Gently pull down on the left edge of it to release 2 spring clips. You will see another black torx screw that goes straight up into the round leather piece. To loosen it, I put the torx bit into a 1/4" drive socket. Just need to loosen it a little and then you can then turn it and remove it with your fingers. Try not to deform the black plastic piece too much when reaching in to take out that screw. Then I cut and placed adhesive felt pieces along the back of the rounded trim piece. Then reverse all the steps and put it back together. All quiet...so far.

Thanks Paul.

Just took off the grab handle and inspected the leather padding piece.

Sounded like the only rattling there came from the metal bracket that holds that small black torx screw in. Pushed that bracket tighter with a pliers and tightened the screw back up.

Will see later if that fixes it or if I need to get back in there with some padding.

Thanks for your help.

Update:

Tightening screws did not work. Time to find some padding to shove in there.

The sewing department at Walmart sells sheets of felt with an adhesive backing. Michael's sells it too. Or Amazon:
Amazon Amazon

I have the same noise. I call it a krinkling noise. It sounds like it's coming from the steering wheel or behind the steering wheel. When I press on the aforementioned crossbeam panels, the noise doesn't stop.
Have others had good luck with adding the felt behind the crossbeam panels as mentioned by the OP?
One guy on youtube said that replacing the windshield solved the problem for them.

Same issue. I tracked it to the metal grab handle rubbing against the hard plastic it’s mounted to.
Removed the grab handle, put some felt tape on the plastic fins, reinstall handle, squeak gone.

Pretty solid in my experience, no rattles at all
Did some some work on it, for the one who's interested

Same here. Mine first developed around 1,000 miles or so. I just turn up the music.

Pushing on it seems to stop it, but only while
the pressure is applied. If I eventually get too aggravated by it, I debated shoving a wedge or fabric inside there to create the same amount of directed pressure.

there’s a common issue with the A pillars that can create a noise while driving that sounds like crinkling. Mine has it a little on the passenger side, but only at high speed and it’s something that can wait until a scheduled service. If you have that on the driver’s side, that might explain why the noise appears to come from the general area between the windshield and the steering wheel. There are plenty of posts about this issue and TSBs on how it gets fixed.
