Hi there, I just sent my 2023 Defender 110 P300 in for it's 30,000 service (oil change, oil filter change, etc.). The dealer is recommending a drive line service for $650. It includes flushing out and replaceing the fluids in the transfer case and front and rear differentials. Is this needed at 30k miles, or are they trying to sell an unnneded service. Thanks.
It isn't in the scheduled maintenance, but if you have the rear locking differential, I highly suggest the rear diff service. JLR recommends the locking rear differential, transfer case/center diff at 63k miles. I believe that is perfectly acceptable for the transfer case/center diff. The locking rear diff clunks, and halving the intervals will keep clunking at a minimum. If you have an open rear differential, then JLR recommends to change the fluid at 105k miles This is also the same for the front differential. I would personally do both at the 63k mark for peace of mind. I will be doing the center and front at 60k miles. I've done my rear diff service twice already on my locking rear diff.
If you don't know what rear differential you have, check the 4x4i menu, and if you have two padlocks (center and rear), then you have the rear locker. If you only have one over the center, then you don't have it.
Thanks for the input. I got the off-road pack so I have the locking diffs. I'm waiting to hear what tirggered their recommendation - dirty fluid, etc.
The fluid does get quite dirty. I'd definitely have it done at 30k miles. I did mine at 34k and a couple weeks ago at 50k. This is what it looked like when I drained it a few weeks ago after 16k miles.

There's no flushing involved. A simple drain and fill is all that is done. Curious as to their rationale. It seems early for the transfer case.

Some oil and two crush washers. is all that's needed.
Rear diff, I think that's a good mileage to change the fluid given the complexity of the ediff and their diva-esque character.

JLR actually does recommend a fluid double flush if clunking is exceptionally bad per TSB# SSM75898. Applicable to all RR L405s, RRS L494s, and L663s with the rear e-diff. Even though it is omitted from the TSB, it also would apply to the L462 Discovery since it can be had with the same differential.

Seems more like dealer speak for, "we're going to add on a bunch of complicated sounding BS". Diff oil change sounds less exciting. For routine preventative maintenance as is the case here, drain and fill is ample.

By flushing they mean to drain and refill, drive the car so the fluid circulates properly, then drain and refill a second time to make sure there aren't any contaminates in the fluid.

Okay. I've always taken a flush to mean some form of pressure involved. Like a brake flush or a transmission flush. Doesn't take much to confuse me.
