I think the issue with the Defender is when you've optioned it out to a high level. The base model is great for what it is but when you get close to $95k - 100k for a Defender you're lacking a lot of the refinement that you see in the high end Land Rover products.
The base full sized Range Rover with limited to no options is to me one of the best deals for an SUV on the market. I wish as they moved upmarket with Defender trims they pulled in some additional refinement like better quality interior materials, glazed glass, etc. I'll be curious to see if the Defender SV includes some of these improvements to justify the high price.

I think a lot of folks are surprised when they realize they don't receive a "Luxury" experience with a Defender. The price is deceiving. I think it's more a supply/demand equation than you are paying for premium quality/workmanship. I'm a HUGE fan of my Defender and love it dearly. And it is expensive. It's just not a luxury item. I think of it as a red neck mistress. High maintenance, too....

l've got the base model Defender 90 and as standard it's the least noisy vehicle l have ever owned.
l don't feel the need to add any extra sound proofing. Although l can see why you'd want to do it if you were chasing the ultimate sound system performance.
No point doing that with mine....l've only got four speakers. One in each door and then the tweeters at the top of the doors

some of these comments are so entertaining. Whoever mentioned the Defender being the quietest car out of his luxury cars. That is so far from the truth

back to topic. i have fully insulated my defender with a dynamat type of product and acoustic foam and has made a significant difference in audio quality and reduction of road noise. The intention was to improve audio as i was planning for a big aftermarket install but was very pleasantly surprised to see how much it quieted the cabin down.
if you ever take off the door panels ( which is really easy) you will see a cost cutting attempt of JLR and they have added very small pieces to begin with.
OP, if you have question PM me. i would not hesitate to do it. you can find great cheaper options on Amazon and it’s not difficult to do

People would stick "acoustic dampening mat" inside the doors of the old Defender, which was pretty noisy as standard so anything you could do to improve matters was welcome.
Unfortunately some of this material held water, so caused the doors to rot over time.
Same with the footwell sound insulation, it would get wet and never really dry out as it was under the rubber mats. ln time the footwell would rot out.

i used this on top of the butly material. says 100% water proof. you need close cell foam
