Like Don said, extended warranty pricing will rise as soon as you drive off the lot. Best leverage you have for negotiating is when you’re doing the deal on the car. If you wait til your factory warranty is almost up you will pay through the nose for limited “inclusion” plans which quite frankly suck. They are like cheap high deductible healthcare plans. Not worth anything. The top platinum exclusion plans will always cost a bit more. We got a 7 year/100 mile top of the line coverage exclusion plan for $4K after initial quote of $8300 just be saying no several times. This covers everything except a few noted wear items. If you’re comparing prices, make sure you’re comparing plans of similar coverage.

Its very odd that LR doesn't offer factory warranty in the united states, here in canada you can get the factory warranty extended up to 10 years/200k km. The cost was $7795 CAD quoted on a defender 110 SE. That said, looking at the quote just now I do notice it mentions a deductible of $250, so maybe there is more to it than what the dealer told me, as they led me to believe it was extended factory warranty. The quote is on JLR letterhead and doesn't mention any other companies, I'll have to ask them about it in more detail when it gets closer to my delivery date.

Just wanted to update this thread as I just picked up my car a few days ago (it’s awesome by the way). In the end I financed through LR at 2.49% for 60 months I appreciate all the input on the extended warranties. They originally quoted me $6,900 for a 7 year/100k mile extended warranty. I told them I had a friend that recently purchased a new Defender and he was able to negotiate the warranty to $3,900. They agreed and I know have an extended warranty through Continental which covers everything the factory warranty covers. In the end I’m happy as it’s something I wanted for peace of mind and I likely wouldn’t have been as confident in asking for them to discount it as much if it weren’t for this forum.

If you’ll excuse me now, I’m going to go sit in my car and drink some coffee before the kids wake up...

Congratulations, I think you made a great choice on the warranty and got a solid interest rate too. At my budget I'm looking to lease for 36 months. I don't like mileage caps but 15,000 miles per year should be plenty for me these days assuming the working from home thing continues. I don't think I'll be going back to the office commute five days per week even post-covid, I suspect it will be at least two days per week from home, which saves a bit on the mileage. I also hate the thought of potential damages on a leased vehicle but I'm not going offroading, just snow driving. I've run the numbers on lease vs buy a bunch of times and can't justify the payment on a 60 month even at 2.49%,... doubt I'll do any better than that rate even with an 833 FICO. What honestly kills financing at least in my area seems to be the sales tax, when 8% is added onto the cost upfront it really extends the amount of time it takes before I'd start to build any trade equity. From my calculations it's almost a wash after 36 months, meaning the only equity after 36 months is the difference in what you've been paying. I dunno, maybe my math is bad. Year four (on a purchase) is really when the equity finally starts to build up but even that would be offset to a degree by the extended warranty cost. Don't get me wrong if I had the money to just buy one cash upfront and drive it for five or six years I think it's the ideal way to go.

Glad you got the warranty for a good price. It’s amazing the markup they get just by putting big numbers in front of people when a simple “no” will save you thousands. I bought for cash and declined all the crap paint sealants, wheel insurance, etc so my finance guy was desperate to get something out of me since he couldn’t make points or his quota on a loan or lease, so he wasn’t going to let me walk out without discounting the warranty to whatever it took. I always buy cash and keep cars for 10 years or more and it always drives the finance guys batty.

When I purchased my 2020 Defender, I ended up purchasing both an extended warranty (72 month/75,000 mile) and the pre-paid maintenance plan. I did this because on my 2015 Range Rover Sport, I started to have problems once I passed 50,000 miles and regretted not having it. Also, since this is a first year model, I was too nervous to not get the extended warranty. I tend to keep my vehicles beyond the warranty period, so I did feel more secure getting the extended warranty. At the time, the dealer was not offering 100,000 mile (looks like some of you got that).

The dealer initially offered a warranty through Allstate, very comprehensive coverage, (the “Premier Care” in the attached) for 7 yrs, 100K miles for $5,089. On the day of the transaction, we negotiated price, and ended up getting the same coverage, but through Continental for $3,849. All repairs use OEM parts, work can be done at the dealership or any shop of our choice, payments are direct to the shop so we don’t have to pay upfront and get reimbursed, and the coverage is transferable if we sell the car. We haven’t used it yet, so I can’t speak to that side of it. But for less than $4k we thought the peace of mind was worthwhile. I did a bit of research and it seems the warranties are more expensive if you wait to purchase them when the factory warranty ends or bears its end.
thanks all for some great info on this topic. i used all this info to negotiate a 5 yr/100k extended warrant for $3999. the dealer offers it from TWS. crazy how these prices start off in the $6k range and then they can offer it for so much less for those that are armed with the info.

like others, i just wanted peace of mind since i’ll probably drive ~15k/year which would make the standard factory warranty last only 3 years.

Reviving this to check if anybody has the latest on extended warranties through JLR or do I get to settle for a third party provider? I got an email from my dealer offering, but it looks like its third party backed.

Mine was third party too but I'm wondering if JLR uses a third party for this, when I got back my pro-rated refund check it was in a Land Rover envelope. ymmv
