Default Extended warranty

So I just purchased a new Defender 130, the dealer offered a 84 month extended warranty for approximately $5700. I have 7 days to make up my mind whether to take it or not. Reading the various threads it appears that if it is through JLR, it is worth it. Any opinions?

I think I love the security of a warranty, but they are not worth it according to the experts. I have 15,000 trouble free miles on my 130. My 2 prior LR's were in the shop almost monthly. So no.... I would take the 5700 and buy a 3 year CD at your local bank.

I just enquired with my Land rover dealer In Portland, OR, USA on extending my 2021,110 HSE defender.
In March of 2025 my main warranty expires and so I am looking to purchase an additional 3 years. I have 24,500 on the clock and was told I have to pull the trigger under 25,000 in order for it to be valid.
I was quoted $4250 for 3 years(with an excess/deductable of $250) additional coverage and the platinum extended warranty offered covers nearly all the same parts as the original LR factory warranty.

I think I'm going to go for it as I want that peace of mind in case anything goes wallop. Hope this helps.

Hey @karlos73 I'm in Portland also. Was this warranty through JLR (or through the LR dealer)? I ask because I had inquired earlier this year also at LR Portland when I was having a tire fixed -- just out of curiosity and the LR dealer said it was through a 3rd party "but that I wouldn't know the difference" and I passed as a result. Just curious. I've had very poor experience in the past with dealership sold extended warranties through third parties on prior vehicles (denials of coverage, company going out of business, etc). . If it's through JLR perhaps there's a new offering and I'll ask again.

All, what mileage limitations are you being quoted on the extended warranties?

I'll say that the price for the 84 month is exactly what I paid for my JLR Extended warranty through the dealer at the time of purchase. 7yr/100k. So, at the very least the cost is 'accurate' in my experience (no extra crazy markup). That said, the dealer did push hard their own extended aftermarket warranty, and I agonozied over it for a few days as it was significantly cheaper. I read up on the reviews on it, but of course you only see negative online and you'll never hear the both sides of the story. But, I've also had bad experiences with extended warranties (aftermarket) in the past to the point where I simply wont do it if its not backed by the brand itself.

So, for me, it was JLR or bust. And I ponied up. I just dont want to deal with headaches. I wanna drop the thing off and say fix it. I'm not interested in submitting claims, making my case, etc. IMO thats the dealership's job, and in my experience they're not as willing to jump through hoops with some aftermarket warranty -even if it was them who sold it in the first place.

If you plan to keep over 4 years, I'd say it'll be worth it and pay for itself. My 130 just hit 8k miles and its just over a year old. Its been solid, but even if it werent, the factory warranty will cover it. For me its the big ticket items I'm worried about long term (head light replacement as the DRLs are a known failure point for example).

For what its worth the dealer didn't even offer the JLR warranty to me, it was their aftermarket option only. I've been in the business in my past, I know thats just what pays them the biggest kickback. When I said I'm only intrested in JLR, they 'had to get back to me' as they'd 'never sold a JLR warranty ont he defender before'. - I knew it was BS and I said you can either sell me the JLR warranty or I'm not interested. Later that day I got the $5700 quote for 7yr/100k, almost double the aftermarket warranty cost. But I ponied up because like you, I've had bad experiences with aftermarket before.

I just bought a 110 V8 and was offered the 84 month extended warranty. I was super close to getting it but ended up declining. They dealer told me I have until 25,000 miles to change my mind. I have the pamphlet here in front of me. It says "Vehicle must have at least 30 days left of the manufacturer's warranty and 25,000 miles or less on the odometer."

I'll see how the first 25,000 miles go.

My guess is you'll be fine for the first 25k. Its over 40-50k that starts to concern me. Headlights due to burnt out DRLs or ANY air suspension issues alone will ensure the warranty pays for itself. Just out of curiousity as I'd definitely consdier going form 130 I6 to 110 V8 someday once the kids are older and outta car seats and strollers, what'd they quote you as cost ofr the 84/100k mile V8 warranty?

The dealer quoted me $7,000 (JLR Riverside), which now I'm glad I didn't get it from them seeing what others are offered. There was no markup on the vehicle, but apparently they marked up the extended warranty. I'll probably call around to other dealers to see what they're quoting. Not sure how long I will keep the car. I absolutely love it so far, so maybe longer than I usually keep cars which is about 4-5 years on average. The car I owned the longest was 7 years.
