Front Runner Slimline Rack on a Defender 90
I had a calm relaxing day for a change and the weather was crisp and sunny. I decided to re-fit the Front Runner Slimline II rack on the D90, since I just pulled the Expedition rack off for winter. I made my own design Land Rover stock rail adaptors to work with the Front Runner universal feet. I do not much care for Front Runner's latest mounting system, as it tends to block the access to the bottom of the rack. I put stuff down there, like long poles and big tripods. Also fit my own design custom upper wind deflector, which I think looks sharp. It was insanely cheap to make from ABS sheet and some modified brackets. With the FR lower deflector and the upper one, it is not as noisy as one would expect, a tad more than the Expedition Rack. I suppose I need to sell off one, having two is being a bit over the eccentric line. I suppose I should list this one. However, should anybody be considering buying the Expedition or the Front Runner, they are both easy to fit, provided you have the rails and both offer differing kinds of versatility. Front Runner ones probably being more available than the expedition one, being, I heard, on backorder for some time now.

The rack is 2" thick, add 3-3.5 for the feet so it is 5"-5.5" high. I already had this rack, which I used on the Range Rover before. So I kind of ordered the Land Rover one on a dare with the car. The Voyager is nice looking, but appears a tad heavy. The Slimline is heavier than the Land Rover one, since it is a rectangle vs a trapezoid with a cutout. It is a very personal thing, depends on what you throw up there and which on's appearance you prefer. It seems to me that all the racks mounting system's tracks are the wrong size for pretty much anything you want to throw up there. Necessitating buying or making a bunch of adaptors at a couple of C notes each. The Series III I had in Italy, had this humongous steel rack with no mounting points on it. You just tied everything to it and it kind of resembled a Mexican bus loaded. I shipped it back with the vehicle, why I don't know, different times. On the plus side, you could get 4-6 people up there for Sundowners, without a squeak.
