Gas Grade and Brand
Being in the Northeast, I use 93 or 91 octane, which ever is available. And it is usually either at Irving, Citgo, or Sunoco. If I happen to see an Exxon or Shell, then I will go there instead. Costco gas is also supposed to be good, but the lines are always ridiculously long so haven't purchased Costco gas in a long time. Being from California, I was always partial to Chevron, but no Chevron out here. And always avoided ARCO gas as I got terrible mpg in my P38 using ARCO.
I personally try to stay away from Irving whenever possible. At least in Maine. I filled up my truck with diesel once and within 5 miles my water separator alert came on. Drove with the separator drain petcock open the whole way to my mechanic's where we drained the tank and found that I had gotten about 2 gallons of water mixed in with my ~18 gallons of diesel.
Interesting question. When in the mountains there are times when 85 octane is the highest grade available, but in all fairness, at altitude the truck runs much leaner and high octane can be a bit of a waste. Even at lower altitudes the knock sensors do a great job compensating for lower grade gasoline. When I'm in Dallas I run 93 octane, it's readily available and Dallas is at less than 600 ft.
91 octane
On a side note I find the gas cap very entertaining, it will not stay in its designated spot, like a 4 year old.
The little plastic tether always spring it out of its seat before I can get the gas spout into the funnel.
Is it just me?
