The little plastic tether always spring it out of its seat before I can get the gas spout into the funnel.
Is it just me?
Nope, mine pops out like a spring too.

Mine is like this, but if I tuck the stem bend the cap, it stays in its place every time.

Actually... highest octane but this is essential:

What is interesting that in Canada, Costco adds more detergents then Shell... and its the same fuel truck that stops at both stations...
Go figure.

As for choosing an octane less then suggested... good luck with that. In time it will start to have effect.

I’ve experimented with running on 89 lately and have noticed no knocking, no loss of power, no loss of fuel economy. This includes a lot of highway driving in the mountains, including over 1,300m (4,300ft) elevation.

tried 94 ethanol-free in Canada, no difference with 91 (was towing trailer too).

IMHO, if you can afford to buy a Defender, you can afford to put the correct octane fuel in it.

First. I use the Chevron Rewards app on my iPhone. At my rate of usage it drops the price of premium down to the price of regular. Usually about $0.40/gal.

Second. The old school adage of lowering the octane level til it knocks doesn’t work for these engines. The ECU is monitoring your O2 levels and will de-tune all your timings (spark and cams) to accommodate low grade fuel. In my case, P300, I have a 2 liter engine ( 125 cu/in.) that can generate 300hp when asked. That’s remarkable! I give it the highest quality gas I can find.
