Default Head-up Display

Can anyone with experience using the head-up display share their thoughts? I'm interested in both the positives and negatives.

Does the display automatically adjust its brightness at night to keep the information clear and minimize the visibility of the blue background?

Here are some photos of the Range Rover head-up display. Does it look the same as the one in the Defender?

I don't have the HUD on mine, but I honestly kind of regret not getting it. I just spent two weeks in a Discovery Sport loaner car that had one, and it is the same HUD they have been using for years. The HUD doesn't automatically adjust the brightness. You can change it manually in the settings. I'm not aware of any HUD that automatically adjusts; they all have a slight blue background at night. The graphics are pretty decent, but they aren't as sharp as the HUD in my seven year old Audi Q7. It does offer lots of information. Obviously speed and navigation, but also the traffic sign recognition; Driver assistance features like ACC and LKA; the cool off-road menu that you included above, as well as the selected gear and a tachometer when shifting manually.

The HUD adjust brightness depending on if the headlamps turns on. So it dims at night. You can then adjust it to your liking and when you press program memory on the door it is stored under that profile (1-3). So the daytime brightness and nighttime brightness is stored. I don't see the background at night on mine.

Really like it when I drive in the mountains for manual shifting. Shows a mini-tach and what gear your in. Does not work with Apple Maps, but with the Pivi-Nav. So if you want turn by turn in the HUD, you need to enter your destination in the Pivi-Nav as well. Drives my wife crazy, I find it useful, but really have not switched it. on for a most of the summer, so I suppose not super useful. Ski season again soon, so I suppose I'll be using it again.

I have HUD in a couple vehicles, my LR and my GMC Denali truck. I really like the feature.
I do wish it was position adjustable like the HUD is in my GMC, I would like to bring it down a bit.
Overall, I am still glad I have it in my Defender.
Wishing all my vehicles had it.

You can adjust it. Go to the settings on the instrument panel, select HUD and there should be a position setting and you use the steering wheel controls to adjust it. It is overly complicated compared to my Audi, where you just use a **** next to the headlight controls to adjust the position.

Very nice!
Thank you !
Yea my GMC truck is pretty simple too.
I have been learning that a lot of the LR stuff like this is so much different than what I am used to, that it is almost as if it was hidden on purpose. LOL
I am almost surprised it is not something I have to get my GAP to out to adjust. LOL

Thanks again for the tip.

I've had HUD in 3 cars now, my 2020 Defender X being the newest. I prefer the HUD in the Defender over the 2 HUDs in other cars (2 different BMW's).

It's nice, and it came on my X so I have it... but to be honest, I could do without it. It doesn't really provide that much useful information. Not an option I'd pay for if given the choice.

I like the speed up there on the highway. I like the turn by turn nav directions but they don't work for apple CarPlay maps which is what I use now usually instead of the pivi pro maps. The Offroad display is useless, the gyrometer etc isn't helpful on trails.

One downside to HUD: When offroad with windows down, dust and sand builds up in the HUD display area and however gentle I am to remove it, I've scratched up the clear plastic lens a bit with my cleaning / vacuuming. I'm scared to use any cleaning solutions or polishes on it as I've read numerous reports in LR forums about the lens going cloudy or deteriorating from UV damage and cleaning solution damage. The clear lens is apparently a bit delicate.

I'll echo what others have said and reiterate: it doesn't integrate navigation from Apple Car Play. So, no Waze, Google Maps, etc. That would be a neat feature. But...because I like having turn-by-turn directions displayed in the HUD, I default to the Pivi Pro for most navigation.

Now, if there was a setting to default to the Pivi Pro for navigation at ignition instead of Car Play, I'd be in heaven.

I'm a big fan. Had HUD on my Discovery last 6 years and now on the new Defender. Works really well and love the live speed and speed limit right there. Well worth it.
