Great setup @GavinC Thanks for sharing the details. I am a new defender owner and need the cargo space—4 kids.
—>Is your light kit also from Reese?
I like that you added the license plate—seems safer for those following as a heads up. We have the spare plate too so I will borrow that idea.
—> I was just debating with my husband—he wants the hitch for the coolers. I disagreed and said we should put the camping tents in the hitch bc the cooler would be exposed to the sun too much (we live in SoCal). Settle our debate??
Putting the big cooler in the trunk takes up most of the real estate, so outside it goes. When its full of cold/frozen food and ice and packed to the brim this particular model will hold ice for a long time even in the summer heat (not SoCal but 90+ many times). I've not experience any problems. We also bring the 5 gallon water/ice cooler as were often at places without potable water. Storing both inside would not be possible.
I also like having it outside as after we've packed up I can stop for ice and fill it without opening the trunk and rearranging things. The cam straps also don't need to be removed with this model cooler.
Excellent thank you!! I’ll let my husband win on cooler placement—because you just helped make my case for the Yeti upgrade. 😉 Thx for light kit link—have that, the lock pin and the rack in my cart. 👍🏽

Happy to help. The Yeti is great. My other half was hinting at wanting something in a Tiffany Blue box. I think I hit it out of the park.
Good call on the locking hitch pin. It really is a must.
This is the one I got but I'm sure there are plenty of good options.
Best of luck with the carrier and camping trips to come.
