I’d posted up about this in another thread few weeks ago, I got some new floormats made. My interior is a bit boring for me on my 2020 Defender X. And the rubber JLR floormats are always mangey looking. My car’s always dirty and the mats somehow just bother me in this car. So -- keen for something else.
The guy that owns Golden Rovers, a Disco 2 accessories shop, connected me to Jon @ Inhabit Designworks who wanted to make mats for L663. They do simple floor mats for Sprinter vans & overloading type vehicles. They also now do Grenadiers, some Porsche -- anyway, high-quality, precise fit, custom mats. So I was interested.
Few weeks back they had my Defender (7 seater 2020 110 X) for an afternoon to measure & prototype it. Now I’ve just picked up the mats. They will start selling them soon.
It’s Chiliwich material with a probably 1/4” closed cell backing (some sort of squishy rubbery stuff). They can get wet and don’t absorb water. If they get wet and water gets underneath them, you can take them out to dry which I guess is like any other carpet style mat. To clean, they advise just water. They don’t stain. There are, idk, something like 20 color patterns you can choose from. They look like the placemat material you’ve all seen. https://www.inhabitdesignworks.com or https://www.instagram.com/inhabitdesignworks. (btw no $ or relationship here, just a satisfied customer)
These are more expensive than JLR rubber mats but the quality seems to be accordingly quite excellent. Genine Chiliwich material that is backed is pricey and he uses genuine black Sunbrella (important because it’s non-fading) binding with good UV resistant thread stitching in the bindings. I asked lots of questions. Ticked all the boxes.
I got front + rear + cargo mats + an accessory pack (all 4 door pockets and the cupholder, which note the cupholder is different on 2020 from 2021+). I think they would need a 2021+ model to get the cupholder right and a 5 seater to get the 5 seater rear mat and cargo mat right btw, which the owner is aware of.
Verdict = super impressed. They give a little pizazz to the interior and should be durable.
I told the owner Jon I’d take them out when I went hard offroading to not get them dirty. He said leave them in and I’d be surprised how easily they clean up. So I’ll give it a try, although for long trail trips I’ll prob dump the crappy JLR rubber mats in and keep these for normal around town driving. I’d rather trash the JLR mats I dislike.
I’m looking forward to seeing how they hold up over time. Great compliment to the color scheme and rubber/plastic floors of the Defender. These would not be my 1st choice for a luxury car with carpeting - but for the L663, or an adventure type vehicle, well-suited. They truly do look great. They have these patterns now in their system and a digital plotter to manufacture/cut these - Inhabit is a bustling operation with a whole staff of people and they don’t hand cut mats - it’s really cool. Couldn’t be a nicer bunch of folks, and based right here in Portland OR. Pics to follow:
Drivers
Passengers
Rear Seats (7 seater, diff pattern than 5 seater ! note). Note: I didn't get a mat for the 6/7 seat)
Cupholder (2020 only). I thought this would be cheesy but no. I dig it. Better in person. Quite dapper.
Driver door panel with winch cord.
Passenger door panel. These lay on top of the rubber. Unnecessary but they do matchy match and looks nice when opening the door.
Cargo area 7 seater. Cracking good. This looks really great in the car actually... .
Bonus trail feeding mat for my bloodhound!
I think this is how they ship the mats out - I took this picture in their shop.

Damn, I'm old. I remember when you couldn't find "crap" to accessorize your Defender. Gosh darn, new fangled ideas every dag gum day! (Looks cool, btw.)
Wow, these look fantastic! Checked the website and they offer mats for the Macan, too! Question - why do you say the cupholder mat is for 2020 only? My 2021 has the same cupholders. The 2025 service loaner I'm in right now has the new cupholders that no longer have the center cut-out or "Red Bull cupholders" as I call it. I don't remember 2022-2024 models having different cupholders than mine. Are they different?
Cincy - maybe 2020-2021 cupholders are same and they changed in 2022. I do know that the earliest Defenders had a slightly larger depression on the right (passenger) side, which mine does. Then at some point, they made each side symmetrical (same size, same depth). Then they changed the cupholder again in 2025 like in your pic above.
BTW I also have some little rubber accessory thing down there I bought from powerful uk or amazon that catches spills, and I had them trim the little carpet mat to fit inside of that. To further complicate things.

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure if mine has the deeper depression on the passenger side... I'll have to check once I get mine back. Thanks for the clarification!
