If I might ask, what size USB storage is needed?

IIRC, it was either 16 or 32 GB. I used a 64 GB USB-A stick and it worked perfectly fine.

What I just downloaded was about 17-18 gigs. I was using a 64g USB drive.

To all those whose responses were a great asset, thank you. I was able to complete the map update as outlined. A few more steps were involved, such as downloading the ‘HERE’ map installer and making the connection to enable the download. Took about an hour and a half to complete the download and about 30 minutes to upload the files to the vehicle. Still not sure if I will notice any difference. For instance, there is a new set of buildings near me that just went up in the last year or so. On the previous map version when viewing the location, it just showed an empty lot, as did Google maps or iMaps. After the map refresh, it still shows an empty lot, whereas both the other maps apps show the current state of the property, with the buildings visible. Also, when I go into the search mode on the Defender map and search for one of those businesses, I get results for one, which is a new restaurant, but the other market next store returns no results when searching. And this market has been open for over a year. So still not sure how or where the map update gets its info but for the most accurate results I end up using Google maps anyway.

It's my understanding that the vehicle downloads and updates maps regularly, but if you are adding maps from outside your region you need to download them direct from JLR websites.

I did the download, as nicely tucked into the USB drive. Now I put it in the car and it says it needs 42 minutes to update the maps. I plug in the CTEK to the car and turn the car on. Ok, definite fail there. Car turns itself off in a few minutes. So I just open the door, repeat, nice message needs 42 minutes to update maps, update? confirm. Close the door go away. Come back, open the door, update failed to load, try again (I've tried again twice)? So what is the scoop here, is there a stand upside down holding the USB stick singing a song or what?

Even when I put my CTEK on, the car eventually shuts off. I might be doing something wrong (?).

Anyway, seeing all the input here, I was able to run the update while driving somewhere. Took right around 30-35 minutes.

I did the same thing. I feared starting the download and having it fail to complete, so I started the Defender, plugged in the USB drive, followed the prompts and went for a ride. Took about 30 minutes or so.
