OK,

As much as I am a believer in extended oil changes, I'm starting to come around to the thought of changing it at LEAST every 10k/1 year ish - or close to that (since we're about to pass the one year mark and I think we're only around 8k now).

So I ordered an extractor from Amazon (that someone had linked to in the oil change thread).

Then I started down the rabbit hole of trying to find the JLR spec oil: STJLR.03.5006

Has anyone succeeded in buying an oil in the US that MEETS this standard?

I've tried multiple websites in the US, UK, and DE and have not found any that has it who will ship to the US.

I'm going to actually inquire at my dealer today, but past that, I'm not thrilled with the idea of using say the US Castrol 0W-20 or any oil that doesn't specifically carry the STJLR.03.5006 certification.

What oil and source are you using?

I think I'd seen the Liqui Moly in another post (maybe one of yours) but hadn't noticed it met the old STJLR standard. That's good to know, thanks.

 

The only significant difference in the current ( STJLR.51.5122) vs. new ( STJLR.03.5006) JLR standard is there is much more ash dispersion capability in the new spec oil. This I suppose is what enables the claim of 21K miles (up from 15K miles -- I recall).

I suspect there is not a JLR dealer in the U.S. who is actually using oil in the shops which meets the new specification -- a heads up for those thinking of going to 21K miles between changes. I called the parts department of several and they had no awareness of the new spec requirements.

I have been unable to find the new speced oil in the United States or anyone from Europe who will deliver it.

In addition to the Liqui Moly noted by PaulLR (I order mine from NAPA AUTO -- no other auto parts store seems to have access to it), you can meet the curent spec by

a) ordering the JLR- specific Castrol from Atlantic British OR
b) you can buy from the web Mobil 1 ESP Advanced Fuel Economy oil (from Amazon). It MUST be Mobil 1 ESP -- Mobil 1 does not meet the current spec. (only claims to recommend the prior one -- circa 2010-2015)

Mobil doesn't appear to think that Mobil 1 ESP meets the required specifications, according to their website:

 

Both JLR specifications have mysteriously been removed from Mobil 1 ESP X2's Product Data Sheet. They used to be there - sounds like lawyers got involved.

The Liqui Moly website also says no approved oils in the US. The LR version isn't even listed as a product as far as I can see, even though it is available on Amazon and listed outside the US as having STJLR.51.5122 approval. Looks like some kind of strange JLR/USA issue.
