Same problem with my X. It’s inconsistent which tells me that it can work.

I have noticed two things that I did a quick push, and my Defender did not unlock. I then push the button and held it in until it opened. I think the design is a more extended push to unlock but a quick push to lock. The other thing is more of an observation. I read that the 2019 F150 was stolen. What made it unique was the truck's keys were in the house, and the truck was parked a good 150 feet away. The police believed he uses the transmitter's frequencies and the truck to gain access and drive away. The truck thought that the key was in the truck. Maybe LR thought about it and reduced the distance between the transmitter and the Defender to unlock the doors. We are just conditioned with ease of access with our other vehicles.

Default keys

this seems as a common problem. having the same issues and some days are better than others. took it in to the dealer and obviously couldn’t replicate the issue and they didn’t even change the batteries. interesting my tailgate works 100 percent of the time.
never had an issue

the manual says up to 8 feet range or something like that. so all the discussion of car theft and short range doesn’t match up

something is wrong and we need tk get a service bulletin open

Same issue here. Having it in the same pocket as my cell seems to always cause an issue unlocking. Having the key out by the door almost always works. Thought it could be the battery but now seeing this perhaps it’s not. Going to try everything and if anyone finds out what’s happening, pls post.

This is really strange. I cannot open any door on my 2020 Defender without pressing the buttons on the door handles, however, I can open the rear gate without having to press the button. I just do not understand the logic here, and why did Land Rover design keyless entry in this fashion?

Security. Previous models (my old LR4 for example) would unlock by just touching and pulling the door handle with the key in proximity - no need to press a button first. That made it very convenient, but also extremely easy to clone the signal from a distance for a thief equipped with the right frequency scanner, and gain access to your car. The new system adds a smidgen of "inconvenience" - you having to physically push a button to unlock the door - but it is allegedly much more secure.

I too have noticed that I have better success if I press and hold a button on the door or if opening the tailgate I press and hold the release. I like that the tailgate will release while the vehicle is locked and after closing the vehicle remains locked. The manual did not seem clear to me on that process but I believe I have confirmed it was intentional. Occasionally I too have to make sure I am closer when I press the door unlock button but as others have said it might be a tightening of security features which is fine with me.

Homelink garage door opening is another items that takes a long push for success by the way. If I ever get an Activity Key it will interesting if that really changes the characteristics of door unlock buttons.

I've never seen a keyless entry system implemented so poorly. The feature would fail once in a blue moon in other vehicles for me, perhaps when there was some interference or some "sleep" state in the vehicle. Like others, the fob needs to be out of my pocket and literally next to the button for the feature to work. Locking works no problem. Curious if this can be resolved with an update or if this just is what is. Love my Defender - I can certainly live with this!

I have to agree, I can reliably lock the truck with the key in my pocket. But the front door has only unlocked once without the key in my hand. But if I press the passenger door behind the driver, I can unlock about 1/2 the time. Only had the truck for a week, so we'll see how it goes.

My last 2 cars (Audis) never had a problem locking and unlocking with the key in my pocket. And they always warned me in the car before the battery ran down. My wife's Fusion is the same.

This is a LR problem, hopefully a software update can help (If I can ever get one into my truck...)
