I apologize for what has to be a repeat question - I did a search and because the keywords are so common (and 3 letters) I didn't find an answer.
I've read a bunch about the chrome caps on the stock lug nuts on my '24 110. It sounds like there's a tool that was supposed to be included with the vehicle to pop them off, but I don't seem to have one. I'd like to avoid having to deal with this on the side of the road if I get a flat sometime...
If someone knows the name/part number of the tool that I should be using to get the little chrome caps off so that I can pull the wheels off, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
@Seventh do you have a link to an example of that discussion so we can be sure we're all talking about the same thing? Personally I haven't seen any lug nuts that have any decorative trim on them that would need removing. My 18's are just metal nuts that you zip on and off with a wrench. But there's a lot of variations of things and terms so if you can help us out, we'll see what we can find out.
The cap is cosmetic and isn't meant to separate. If any issue with getting the socket to fit, would gently tap the socket on. Had lugs with caps on an older Volvo which separated and I just threw away the caps. The OEM nuts appear fairly reasonably priced at $30/wheel.
The Reddit post is odd. All the lug nuts on the truck are the same (except the locking ones - which - garbage bin them as far as I'm concerned).
In the Reddit post, it looks like a different lug nut entirely - I'd almost guess someone put an old Range Rover Classic or D1 lug on there. is that even possilble?
The lug nut caps are not removable. From my experience, after about 8 years of winter/summer tire changeovers on our LR4's, some of the caps got deformed. The lug nuts work fine, it's just that the deformed caps get stuck in the socket. You can also deform the caps if a mechanic uses a similar English size socket instead of a true 22mm. You can buy new OEM lug nuts as needed or many of us bought aftermarket "Gorilla" lug nuts that did not have that cap.
