Default No-drill roof wiring solution

I've asked in couple threads and seen that others have asked as well about how to run wires for roof accessories, but haven't seen any answers. This past weekend I finally got around to wiring my solar panel and found a route to run wires from the roof to the interior without drilling holes in the roof. Here are some pictures explaining the process for anyone that wants to run their own wires for solar, lights, or other accessories.

The first thing you will need to do is remove the plastic d-pillar trim piece above the tail-light. It came off easily with a plastic pry tool from the interior side. Mine didn't pull apart like it did in powerfuluk's video (maybe they fixed it for 2021?). This exposes the hole that goes through the d-pillar (indicated in photo by green arrow). It had a rubber plug in it that I removed and drilled a hole through for the wires.

Once that trim panel is off, you will need to loosen the interior trim enough to get your hand in there. Again, I'd suggest watching powerfuluk's video on how to do this. Not difficult. You can then run your wire under the rear spoiler and into the hole. I have the full size front runner roof rack, so there is an opening just before the spoiler panel that the wire passes through on the roof. In the photo with the flashlight, you can see that there are two holes that line up going through the d-pillar. The surface you see behind the interior hole is the interior trim. Make a 90 turn down and the wire will come out near the rear fuse box. With the interior trim loosened I was able to get my hand to where that hole goes through and grab the wire as I fed it through.

That gets you into the vehicle interior without any drilling. From there I ran my wires straight down into the rear under-floor storage area to my redarc solar input. There is a fuse box on that side of the rear compartment, so it may be possible to get power without going to the main battery. If you have the OEM roof rails, I don't think there is a gap where it meets the rear spoiler. Personally, I'd rather drill a hole in the roof rails instead of the roof.

Thank you. This is was going to be my next project. I do have the factory rails, so I will keep you posted on what I come up with for a roof passage.

I'll be tackling this soon as well, and I too have the factory roof rails.

Thanks for the info!

You can also go up behind the exterior a pillar. I did this for my roof rack lighting. And just matches the wire color to the paint for the quick run where the wire is exposed.
