Oil and filter change video
I have never been interested in draining my Defender the "traditional" way. You two have now inspired me. Partially to see if I have a magnetic version and partially to just check it out. I might do that sometime in the next few changes. Then again, I may do it just after I clean mine's engine compartment.....(aka, sounds like something I'd love to do, not likely something I will do). But, you two do have me intrigued!
Guess, I was lucky.
I was impressed he managed to drain through the hole.
I was sure he was going to make a huge mess, but it wasn't too bad, just lost a shirt I guess.
Or he can rip off the sleeves and show the guns.
The cut bottle was a great idea.

I've got sliders in my future. Maybe before the spring off-roading "season". In order to put them on, I've got to pull all the cladding down there. I think it will be a great time to finally do a drain down below & replace with a magnetic drainplug. Maybe the stars will align and I'll do them about the same time. Thanks for the tips & part #'s. I'll be saving this thread!
watching the video made me think the best method would be to pump the oil out first, then remove the drain plug through the hole to get out the last drops without any mess. The only tricky part would be re-torqing the drain plug properly, which I'm sure he didn't do. you can get close enough by hand I guess.

Someone actually bothered to do all that on a different Land Rover vehicle (ether a recent Sport or a LR4, can't remember now but the video is on YouTube somewhere.) I think he counted exactly 2 drops of oil dripping out when he removed the plug (after vacuuming the oil from the top.) I can't be 100% sure the same would be true for the Defender, but... get ready for disappointment.

Well at the very least it would allow one to install the magnetic drain plug, and then there would be a point to removing it just to clean and check for metal debris.
Changed the oil on my P400 110X today using the "traditional" way (no vacuum). Most time consuming part was removing all the skid plates. Still, that honestly only took a few minutes. The rest was a plain old oil change process. Pretty easy.
