Default P400 Transfer Case Drain / Fill DIY?

Folks, I skunked today trying to follow my shop manual for the transfer case fluid drain and fill procedure. The manual has the diagram for a different transfer case than what’s equipped on my 2023 P400 X. Has anyone completed this DIY service and can share your experience? My main issue is there are three possible drain plugs and two possible fill plugs… argh

It’s a pretty simple job.

there’s only one drain plug. And one fill plug. The whole process is outlined more clearly in the service thread.

More info here.

Thanks for sharing this. I did find this thread before I posted. My unit looks much different than the one pictured. I have a few grainy screenshots posted below as I was trying to take video of the backside. But there is a heavy damper on the bottom that covers one drain plug, another drain plug covered up by an electronic module, one fill plug 3/4 of the way up the right side and then another flat on the top.

We’re headed to the racetrack today but I’ll crawl under the truck and get some clearer pictures. The first picture is from the left side / driver side of the unit. The second picture is from the back and you can see the heavy metal damper at the bottom secured by two long bolts.

Looks like you have the newer iAWD system with torque on demand. Instead of having a center differential in the transfer case, you have a multiplate clutch pack that acts like a center differential and can fully disconnect the front axle for increased efficiency. I haven't been able to find a workshop manual online for the 2023+ models. The I6 diesel sold overseas since 2021 has always had the iAWD - it was 2023.5 when they started making all of the Defenders with this system. I haven't been able to find a manual for the I6 diesel, either, and that would have the same transfer case as a 2023.5 or newer. Your best bet would be purchasing a Topix subscription and downloading it from there.

Hello and good morning,
I'm also about to change the transfer case oil on my Defender 3.0 D with a central Haldex.
Do you have the transfer case in these photos? Like mine?
There is a drain plug and two level plugs, one on the gearbox and one for the Haldex clutch oil pump.
Land Rover recommends removing and draining the pump oil. You'll then need to bleed the oil pump, which requires an LR diagnostic.
