Default Raised Air Intake recall (flies off)

For entertainment value, read this: https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a6...intake-recall/ - quote, "allowing serious adventurers to plow into deeper water than they would otherwise be able to go"

Recall itself: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/202...4E102-3460.PDF

The language is unclear - on one hand, "this relates to an aftermarket-supplied accessory component", on the other, why would JLR care to issue a recall on someone else's parts?

It's a JLR part. OEM RAI. The repair seems to be an aftermarket part. That's how it reads although the authors inferring the RAI is a snorkel for wading casts doubts on any research they did to write this piece.

RAI Useful as a glass hammer unless your daily involves traversing the Kalihari or Gobi. Not sealed. No use for wading. They've been falling off and breaking since the get go. So many posts about this over the years. Incomprehensible to me why anyone would electively pay for and fit one but they are enormously popular. Even seen some mounted on one side of V8s. Tremendous hilarity.

Sort of like an insta-winch.

So the question stands, why would JLR care about an aftermarket part instead of just saying "you play, you pay"?

That's the reason I quoted it. Unprofessional.

That's just about how my environment looks like - Southwest desert. Opposite of yours

That's surprising, I don't remember seeing a single mention since I started doing my research couple of years ago. But then again, you know how Internet is - you won't find it unless you ask exactly the right question.

I came to a similar conclusion when considering the configuration (note zero reaction to this post), but, having seen over the years the amount of dust my Jeep was consistently getting from the places I went to, decided to get it for ****s and giggles. You won't have an educated opinion unless you actually try the thing, eh? All in all, getting rid of it is pretty straightforward.

JLR don't care. These failures are like litter in the forums. RAI's failing at every turn. They've been forced to act by NTHSA so their actions are entirely not driven by consumer feedback but by the lawyers. This is a failure of their own OEM part. It is not an aftermarket product. 100% JLR branded, badged and fitted. They finally own it. I know one dealer (JLR Denver) no longer fits them due to the repeated failures.

Interesting.

Well, I guess, I'll experience it all first hand And you bet that any hilarity encountered while fixing it will be reported, pictures and all. Otherwise what good is it if others don't learn from mistakes I paid for, right?

Same. I paid for it after checking my air filter and finding it caked up after 5000 miles. The air inlet location pulls dusty air off the front tires and I found myself on a lot of dirt and gravel this past year and that poor design obviously didn’t like all the dirt roads. Seems like the aftermarket RAI is fine so far and it avoids that dirt cloud around the midline under the windows so it seems to be doing its job.

So I guess it comes down to dust vs. dirt. Look at the pictures in that thread again, and you will see that the dirt line ends exactly below the air intake, so the dirt doesn't get in - but dust does.

Side note, @GavinC, I am looking at your pictures and am dying from envy - your vehicle looks as clean as if it has just rolled off the assembly line. Here, even the rain brings nothing but dust, and cars after the rain look similar to those in post-apocalyptic movies.

On a wild tangent, where I live the only green vehicles on the road belong to people that have recently moved here, or are visiting or passing through. Locals just don't buy them, it looks weird. Even Pangea Green. Even BRG.

Definitely dust. Some of the dirt roads around here have what we call moon dust that billows out of the front wheel wells which is quite different than stuff thrown off the tires (dirt/mud). You can’t follow anyone on these roads closer than a few hundred yards if you want to see the road and watch for rocks/ruts. Not to mention fear of losing the windshield from rocks.
