Guessing this is your first Land Rover vehicle. On the LR3 you had to carry a phillips head screwdriver and spare brake switch with you at all times. On the LR4 the steering wheel radio input buttons and radio sound would frequently vanish but that was fixed with a simple restart. All part of the charm of owning a British vehicle.

Yes, they should be held accountable and find a way to fix this, if they can even find the cause. You should still put a 10mm wrench in your glovebox to give to the AAA tow driver and tell him the battery is under the passenger side front seat. He can then disconnect and reconnect the negative terminal and have you back on your way in minutes.

Hi Whogan,

What was their solution when it happened again? Would it be ok to ask you what dealership you took yours too? ours is Land Rover Redwood City in California.

I'm not sure what their solution was. It was the weekend when it was towed to the dealership, by the time they got around to it for some reason the battery had died so they reset the battery and the issue was gone. They said they updated software too I think. The dealership is in Ajax, Ontario, Canada.

I also got the message "Lane Assistance not available". We towed it to the dealer. Today they mentioned that it might be the "steering rack" and that they will know more tomorrow. I am going to share this thread with the dealer and I am hoping it is a software update issue and not a part issue. Thank you everyone for all the helpful comments. I will give an update when we get one.
Just wanted to update everyone that we got our car back. They did a software update and hopefully they will be seeing us for a while.

Is this problem specific to P400?

This has happened to me a few times. I get a message “ lane assist not available” and I’ve lost my power steering. 1st time, it went away after I shut the car off for a minute. 2nd time, I had to disconnect the battery for a minute, just Friday it happened as I was just moving my car up a few feet before going away for the weekend. Came back Sunday and it was fine. I had it looked at this summer and the dealer had no clue. Couldn’t tell what fault happened since I disconnected the battery.

Hi El_greco,

for us it was a software update. It actually happened a second time 2 months ago. the second time we turn it off and back on and it unlock and I drove it directly to the dealership and again they did a software update. Hope this helps. we are just as confused and you are as to why this is even happening, otherwise we just love the car.

Default Power Steering failure

Hello-
Brand new LR Discovery owner (250 miles) and upon starting the car the steering wasn’t working. Spent a week at the dealership. They rebooted the system and told me it may happen again. They also said a new bulletin won’t be out until early 2024. I have the 10mm wrench and directions on how to restart it. But now I’m uncomfortable - can this happen while im driving? When my steering wheel was stuck, it was locked in a turned position so I’m worried I could be traveling at high speeds with the wheel locked in a turning position.
