Steering wheel locked, but the rest seems ok.
According to my local Land Rover shop the software fix will be available in a mid-February release of software updates. This is not the regular software update you can get at home, this apparently may require getting into the dealership to have them run and download the update. There’s also been more reports of this problem locally to me. Hopefully we won’t need to disconnect the battery again, but at least that’s a solid known temporary solution.

I also ran into this issue last Sunday with the same "Lane Assist not available" message. While waiting for the car to be towed for 2 hours in Tahoe, we luckily found out this forum and did the same battery reset trick. And it worked like a charm! Thanks to everyone on this thread.
On Monday, I'll be taking the car to service, and wondering what they are going to say. Their initial reaction on the phone have been, they didn't hear such a case before.
Regarding what might have triggered this issue, I turned lane assist off and on a couple of times during last weekend which might have something to do with that warning message. Other than that, it was surprising to hit such a glitch on a car that was driven only for 4 months, and after having the last software update 2 months ago.

It's certainly not the steering rack. The fact that you can easily fix the issue by disconnecting then reconnecting the negative battery terminal points to a software or electronic issue.
That reminds me...our second Defender just arrived at the dealership and I need to buy another KNIPEX 10mm wrench and put it in that glovebox.

Paul ....
When you buy a brand new vehicle should you HAVE to carry a wrench to fix something just in case? I am an intelligent woman but I am not a mechanic and I have no desire to have learn how to do this.
Shouldn't LR be held accountable to fix this?
