Hi - I need to extend the tow bar hitch out beyond the full size spare so my Thule bike rack can fit on the back without fowling the wheel
Any guidance on what length of extender? Assume I want it as short as possible to clear the wheel so the car doesn't get even longer...
And - any difference between the hundreds of models that all look the same...? It's not a lot of weight or pull so beyond needing to ensure it's 2" both ends will anything do? Of any that are less prone to rattle / more secure?
And safety wise - for the boat and trailers I have safety chains - this looks like it is just held in at both ends by pins?
For towing do not use hitch extender.
Use a hitch that is long enough to meet your needs. I use a Curt variable drop hitch. 11" or 12" pin to ball distance. 12" works perfectly for all trailers I've towed so far. Yes it's longer than the factory limits of 6.9" so will limit your tongue weight a little but needs must.

I had the same issue. Solution was 8.5” extender https://a.co/d/483YLE5
Here are before and after pictures. I measured the distance with the rack in place. (The bikes could not be mounted on the rack due to the spare). I selected a 8.5” extender based on the width of the bike so the peddles cleared the spare.
Another Kuat HiLo pro user here. Has a cam inside to clamp to the hitch and has no rattles what so ever. When the bike rack is folded up it's nested close to the spare tire without sticking too far out.
