Default Travel trailer length

Hi - I just bought a 2021 P400 with off road package and towing package. I want to get a travel trailer for camping. I was originally looking at 26-28’ trailers under the tow capacity of 8200 lbs and max tongue weight but I read in previous threads that trailer length should be taken in consideration too. If I stay significantly under towing capacity, what’s the longest length I could consider a trailer without risking sway or other problems?

Assuming you have a 110 28' would not be a problem. We pull a 26' and it does an outstanding job (not counting gas mileage lol)

@DonMitsu Please share what hitch you use and any other modifications. I'm attempting to setup my P400 110 HSE to tow a Airstream Globetrotter 27FB and would love to know what has worked for you.

Like many people in this forum, I use the Redarc brake controller, I have been using an equalizer hitch, and used that hitch for 10 years with my LR4 with no issues. However I've read more about the strains that hitch can put on, not just the suspension, but also the unibody frame, so I'm planning on just using a ball on my next trip. Our Defender does have the towing pack, I'm not sure if that will help any with sway, which is the main reason I like the equalizer hitch. I will say getting the trailer up to highway speeds with the P400 seemed effortless, but don't expect veery good mileage, we were getting less than 10MPG in Texas which is fairly flat, traveling about 75-80mph

Hi DonMitsu,
Getting a Defender with tow package in June. Also getting a 26' Grand Design Imagine XLS 22MLE. All the numbers (GVWR, tongue weight, etc.) are all great with Defender capability. I won't be using a WDH since it's not recommended but we are getting a Tucson Electronic Sway Control. I'm curious how your experience has been towing without a WDH. Having any trailer sway? Does the Trailer Stability Assist in the Defender help? Thanks!!

Can you please share some additional details? What is the hitch weight of your 26' AS? I ask because the hitch weight limit of my '22 Disco is somewhat a mystery (think it's 770) but I also am of the impression that all AS' over 23' exceed this limit. Not sure if Defenders differ greatly in this space. thanks.

I have a grand design and love it. I think you will be happy with that one

FYI the tongue weight on the AS GT 27FB is 871 and the max tongue weight in the Defender is 771. I have a smaller 22FB and have been wanting to upgrade but don’t know how to deal with the heavier tongue weight. Do you ha e a plan or does anyone know how to mitigate a heavier tongue weight than spec?

You'd need to strengthen your hitch to support the greater tongue weight. I had this added by Can-Am RV in London Ontario. Should be able to easily pull a AS 27FB.

Pretty sure tow assist has anti sway technology.
