When my Defender went in to the shop they gave me a loaner Jag. All the software was very similar but the big difference was the hands free lane assist.. I feel like the car should be able to do this. The jag would tell you to grab the wheel if you let go for a short time but it worked quite well. The adaptive cruise indicators were the same except for a hand icon to indicate you needed to hold the wheel.

So after updating to 4.1.0 Apple Maps no longer show up in the IDD and I can’t find where to set it again. Does anyone remember where that option is?

*EDIT: Never mind, I did not have Apple CarPlay enabled in the Pivi main screen.

There is a difference between Lane Keep Assistance (bouncing from one side of the lane to the other) and Lane Center Assist (actually centering the car in the lane and following the curves/bends on the road with minimal driver input). The real question is are we getting Lance Centering with the Pivi 4.1? Considering that even recent Toyota RAV4s have lane centering, I feel the Defender should have/has the hardware for it and would only need the updated software, but I am no expert.

Got the notification that 4.1.0 was downloaded and ready to install yesterday, and it installed with no issues.

4.1.0 installed on Sat night and I drove ~85 miles on I-95 yesterday...unfortunately, the car most definitely still has just lane keep assist (aka lane ping pong) with no attempt at lane centering. Did not notice anything different with steering feel, either.

yeah, I'm not sure the unit in these things (Bosch I believe) is as capable as other systems out there. I wouldn't expect major changes for driver assist until JLR starts to use the Nvidia Drive chipset and enhanced optics, which they are still testing. Rumor is 2025 MY for some vehicles.

For some reason my D5 won't install v4.1 even though it's apparently already downloaded. My best guess is it's the current battery level.

Yep. I was not really holding my breath on this. Though it is a shame to see other cars waaay cheaper than ours with that same technology working fine. But, hey...I am happy enough with Apple Maps in the IDD since I was not expecting that to be a reality in our cars. Win some, lose some.

Downloaded and installed today.

this update is a fake update.

No lane centering, no nothing. As far as I can tell it even makes the ping ponging less effective than before LOL.

Anyways it’s cool — if I wanted it to drive itself I’d buy a Tesla. We should all be careful what we wish for. Driving is the last remaining fun and totally freeing thing left in society. One more win for humans against the robots!

What you said is so true. In the next 15-20 years you probably wont be able to get anything but an electric vehicle.

Not to launch into a philosophical debate...but I have such an internally conflicting stance on this.

I have worked in Emergency Departments at all different levels for the last 20 years. Some of the stuff I have seen... Imagine the decline in auto-related deaths and serious injury if in 15 years, ~75% of vehicles on the roads were self-driving. Granted they need to come further along and improve, but the possibilities are huge.
On the other hand, I am a car guy, and I absolutely love driving. Whether it's my defender, my old *** Disco, or literally anything else. As you said, it is one of the most freeing things we can still do as individuals and I just love being on the open road.

I am hoping that there is a middle ground found somewhere that pairs the safety of autonomous cars with the ability to maintain my own autonomy. Who knows what the future holds.
