Default Remove plastic kick panel

I have no brake lights, and need to remove the plastic kick panel that's underneath the dash. I see that there are three plastic "thumb tacks" that I need to remove, but I'm hesitant to just rip them out with a screwdriver. Is there anything I need to know before I go neanderthal on it?

There exist panel removing tools, the end looks like a "U" and is tapered, you push it under the "thumb tack" (good a name as any, never heard them called that before). and the "U" supports the head as you pull it out, It can be done with a screwdriver but the chance of wrecking the fasteners is greater.
