Default 04D2 speakers

Looking to upgrade the stereo in the D2. Looking at the speakers in the door cards they seem a bit "special".

Are there any direct fit replacements? Crutchfield said there was no direct fit replacements.

For those of you who have upgraded the door speakers, what did you use and how did you make them fit?

Thanks.

I have an 04 DII witrh the premium sound system. I installed Pioneer 6 1/2 inch 2-way speakers that I picked up online for $28 a pair. They sound awesome with the stock amp.

i can't speak for the pioneer above but if he says it fits i guess it does. the problem with the replacement speakers in the D2 doors is the space for the magnet of the speaker is so shallow that most 6 1/2" speakers don't fit because of depth restrictions.

The Pioneers are pretty shallow. I put them in both front and rear doors. I just clipped the wires to the tweeters. You can pop off the speaker grilles ansd install them from the front without pulling the panel. Two of the screw holes line up, then you need to bend down a portion of the rim of the speaker to clamp it at the other locations. These speakers have a very low frquency response so they really fill out the low end. I also swapped out the rear door subs for a pair of Kickers powered by a seperate amp which helps as well.

Ah - that answers the next question I was going to ask.

The Amazon page says those Pioneers are 1 5/8 which is really thin - excellent find.

For the subs - did you just pull the feed that was going to the factor amp? I need to do something about those rear door speakers - I can hear low frequencies coming from them when I put my ear against the grill, but there is almost no volume at all...

I believe the factory amp has a built in crossover. My DII came with an aftermarket Alpine head unit, so I just used the sub pre-out to feed another amp. You should be able to take the factory sub feeds outof the stock amp and use a line-level converter to hook up an aftermarket amp. You may be happy with the factory subs with more power.
