As a follow up to the whole LS conversion, I contacted a NorCal shop that is known for doing LS conversions in Rovers to confirm my understanding. He said the disco is ineligible for the LS3 erod conversion as the cutoff is for vehicles with obd1 so 95/96 year model. Since the disco is a 04 (obd2) I’d have to do the carb process as I mentioned above to make smog compliant.
thanks I’m still weighing things out. The shop removed the head and it looks like a new engine will be needed as the damage is not merely just a stuck valve
waiting on AB to confirm the engine will be replaced under warranty. I was told a new engine will take 4-6 months so the disco will sadly be out of commission for the whole camping season…sigh
Completely understandable and I hope things work out so you can keep it, you've built it up so well.
Having heard a bunch of not great things from AB motors the last few years pending damage why not take the 4.6 rotating assembly if the crank and rods aren't damaged and then move things over to a good early build date 4.0 block? A good shop should be able to build that motor quick and easy. Just a thought.
Update….AB is replacing the engine under warranty and was able to bump me to the front of the line given my history of issues. The new engine has already shipped and should arrive early next week.
decided to give it one more shot given I just had a fabrication work done including welding of the sliders to the frame and addition of the rear nerf bars by the shop that fixed the trans line. I have a ton of parts at home as well that need to be installed so I’m hoping third time is a charm for the engine. Wish me luck!

Despite my attempt to swoop in like a vulture a few days ago I'm really happy to hear this, you've built an incredible truck and you deserve to keep and enjoy it!

Haha no worries. If it doesn’t work out for what ever reason I’ll let you know!
The shop has been working on getting the engine installed and are on track to get the disco started today. I’m having them install a gbr front drive shaft and new superpro bushings on the radius arms as the bushings that came with the RTE kit are shot. I received an ETA of this Friday. Crossing my fingers
Project $$$ pit is finally back with almost 6 months worth of grime, its 4th engine, super pro bushings, GBR front drive shaft, nerf bars on the rear bumper, and sliders welded to the frame. Let’s hope the 4th engine is a charm.
