Alright well back at this I guess!! I finished everything I had to do on the red 1994 manual D1. Took it to Colorado with all 5 of us for 2 weeks. Had to roll it down Mt Lincoln and pop the clutch to get it running once.... that was fun.
Pulled the engine from my 95. 95 lump, and a 4.6 14CUX lump The 4.6 was in way better shape than I was expecting . Picked up a custom power steering pump bracket and transfercase jack adapter. Custom Chevy Saginaw style pump bracket mocked up.
Looks good did you design the mount or did you pick it up from someone as a kit?
I got the bracket from a guy I know who designed it. There is a kit available from Mark's Adapters I think, but this isn't it.

How did it do going up the steep mountain roads? I guess you stayed in 1st most of the time or maybe 2nd gear? Any work done to aid in power?
It was a dog on the mountain highways. With 230k miles on the original engine though I expected it.
The new engine is a 4.6 and will get a Crower camshaft/lifters and a GM HEI distributor.
Great photos of CO. Glad you had a clutch to pop on that hill...unlike us auto drivers. Of course, you did have a pit crew to push you up to speed...if no hill was available...lol.

Well to be fair, with a starting curb weight of 4,100 lbs and an additional 1,200-1,600 lbs of people, bumpers, guards, racks, lights, parts, tools, tents, clothes, and personal items, it was probably a dog the day it left the showroom.
I'm interested to hear your perceptions about how much of an upgrade the 4.6 is. While 0-60 is not really what you are after, I'd probably test 0-60 mph before and after, just to have some sort of empirical data rather than just what your seat feels like.
Are you going to pin the liners while it is on the stand?
Hadn't really planned on any scientific tests....maybe. IDK. The engine is tired and leaks all sorts of fluids profusely it's coming out regardless. I also have a ton of other things to change out on it including transfercase to a '04 one and maybe losing the manual trans in favor of an automatic, still TBD. It will also be getting different bumpers, diff gearing, and larger tires. Soooo it will be hard to do any kind of fair comparison.
