Default 200TDi wont go over 30mph

Hi all, I am new to the group I have just purchased a Defender 90 200tdi.

I am unable to get over 30mph. The engines fires up first time without fail.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Its my first Defender so not sure about the speed of which it goes through the Revs. It does seem pretty slow. Once it hits 30mph nothing much seems to happen.

where are you located?
you're sure you are in high range? lever should be towards the rear of the car

My initial thought is a fueling/timing issue. Like someone turned the fuel waaay down or retarded the timing, or both.

I am from the north east. Newcastle. The lever is in the back position. I bought it from a friend who hadnt had it long. Not sure of how long it was sitting for our when the last time it was serviced.

Ok if you are in the UK just take it to a good mechanic and have them retime it and re-set the fueling.

Since you got it, have you changed the oil and fuel filters? If it has been sitting for a while you may try swapping the lift pump (cheap), are there any diesel leaks you can see? Will the turbo spool up? Check for broken boost lines.

Again, a mechanic will be able to sort it

I havent had the filters or oil changed as of yet. I bought it on a whim without a garage so had to build a garage first. Trying to gather as much information as possible before I do anything. Its something I want to try and tackle myself so Appreciate everything.

I can understand you wanting to DIY but,

You need to have a good baseline to start with unless you have prior experience on these motors. A good mechanic in the UK (again, I am presuming you are in UK?) will not cost too much to take a look at the timing and fueling. You should find one and have it gone over in a very basic way. You can even ask them to do some work on it and show you what they are doing and why.

For instance, if your timing is off or a belt is broken you will damage the motor trying to run it without knowing what is wrong.

At least change the fluids, clean up the motor as much as possible to find leaks, and start noting symptoms or take videos and ask someone to compare it with a running Tdi.

Again, are you seeing any diesel leaks? are you seeing leaks at lift pump, injection pump, injectors? Are you getting the turbo to spool? What kind of smoke are you getting from the exhaust? Please report back if you want more help here.
