You can't do it if it is not 25 years old. It doesn't matter what engine you have. If you import a 2003 110 that is not NAS, you will pay about 25k - 75k to get it up to spec. It is not worth it to do it illegally through Canada or Mexico. Insurance doesn't have to cover you if your car isn't what it says it is on the VIN. If you import anything after 1974, the emissions are a consideration. There is no such thing as a Defender Kit Car...don't try it. It will be the most expensive lawn ornament you ever purchased. Bottom line, if you want to do it, do it right and just purchase a NAS 110. Otherwise, purchase a Series III and put a Defender grill and front wings on it. The DOT isn't stupid...they know what they are looking at. Essentially, if you have enough time and money to blow trying to work around the system, save it and spend it on a legit Defender. Ultimately, all other routes are really more costly and much more time consuming. Sorry to take a wiz on your parade, but I would rather shoot you straight than see you shoot yourself in the foot.

Engine doesn't matter. It's either a NAS 1993 (110), or it's 25 years old. If it is newer than 1976 it needs to be able to pass EPA emissions standards too. If you import a 1993 and try to turn it into a NAS, count on spending upwards of $75k in the process once all is said and done.

1983 defender 110's - there were 6000 made. the engines were 2.286 petrol and diesel (same as series 3) and 3.5ltr V8 same as early range rover and stage 1V8 series3
