Default popping sound...

Hi guys,

I have a strange noise which seems to have appeared recently in my 2008 110 Puma (travelled approx 63,000miles)... upon applying drive (releasing the clutch) where the vehicle begins to move, I hear a small 'pop' noise coming from the drivetrain somewhere. Mostly I hear it when reversing out of my drive... straight and slightly uphill. But it can also happen forwards start in 1st, turning or straight... It also happens say when I am changing down to 2nd to corner. Only happens under rpm around 1500 or thereabouts (if I feather the throttle at 1000 rpm when releasing the clutch, it does not occur)

I have never heard this type of noise before, but could it be something that is slipping slightly under load and ok when rolling? The rear diff did have a leak in it when I bought it, that was fixed by LR in London prior to delivery... maybe a lack of oil for a while in there?... or something to do with the clutch assembly maybe? CV joint?

Anyway... I am at a loss and wanted some advice incase it is a sign of something needing replacing or imminent failure

Thanks in advance!

Hi Secablue

Unfortunately this forum is mostly American/Canadian, so we have much less experience with the newer (and diesel) motors, Td5, Puma, etc that were never offered to our markets. You may have more luck on sites like Defender2.net, etc. that are more orientated towards European/ROW land rovers.

That said, I would lean more towards clutch, driveshaft, u joints, possibly diff pinion area. Does it happen when turning, straight, only? Maybe transmission, maybe something is binding up in the driveline. Do you have an R380? Does it happen in every gear?
