Default Transmission: Popping sound when shifting to drive

02 disco with 95,000 miles. For the past week or so I've been hearing a disturbing click - or really popping sound when i go from park to drive or reverse to drive. It's fairly loud and just one pop, not really a grinding at all, and it doesn't happen every time but most times. It only happens when shifting into drive - and I never hear any similar sounds when the car is moving. I changed the transmission fluid last night (got about 4 or so liters out and pumped closer to 6 back in) but it's still popping when going to drive.
I'm wondering if this is a big deal that could go south quickly and if there is anything I can check without taking it in. thanks for any suggestions.

Do you have greasable ujoints on your front prop shaft and you rear drive shaft, and do you grease them every oil change? If not, would be concerned that front shaft will be the first to go, it usually starts making a chirp, then flies apart and implales the transmission. There is a write up in the tech section of D1 that covers D1 and D2, with pictures, for propshafts.

Hm, well I bought the ujoints to do the front prop shaft about a year ago but after reading all about it (the pdf is great) decided it was a little over my head and then kind of forgot about it.

That's probably a good place to start, thanks
