Cool $700 dollars later...

I Have a mostly entirely working Disco!!! I found a local 1998 Discovery I for sale on my block. Been sitting for a while, guy was asking two grand. He said if it wasnt gone within the weekend, he was scrapping it. Therefore, I offered, and got it for $500. It has 98k miles, but a few problems. In the week I had it, I have fixed the Centre Locking Diff, Fixed the front window regulator, fixed the brake light switch. New brakes on her, and that's really it! Sunroof(s) work, it has the roof rack and front brush guards with tail light guards. It has working power/heated seats, the heat/AC work brilliantly, there isnt much wrong with it actually. So, including the cost of the truck, i'm in $700. It still needs some things, muffler is rusted off, power steering is heavy when it's really cold, but once warmed up it's fine. Needs new 02 sensors so says the computer. And it gives me a very little trouble shifting out of 2nd when cold, but only under heavy throttle. So, do you guys think I got a good deal? haha

Wow sounds like a great deal, congrats! read up on the 60k maintenance.

My next paycheck I will most likely be doing a tranny service on her myself. As well as a power steering flush. The D1 takes ATF in the steering correct? any specific type? Also I hear rumours that if a tranny hasnt been serviced by 60kmiles, dont service it bc the fluid may be too thin after that when new...is there anything to this? Thanks!

Yes on ATF in PS. Heat working brilliantly might be more than you want. The temp gauge is not real accurate. A scanner or Ultra Gauge can show you the real temp. Note in pix gauge is normal, temp is pretty high on scanner. You can also download the RAVE (shop and owner manual set).

I dont know about you but that temp gauge is reading high as well

That is the object lesson, at 235 F the gauge is just above 50%, even on the "analog" D1, but most of us would agree overheating has already begun. At the higher ends of the scale, you enter the drive thru window for "extra crispy"....

The heat gauges on Rovers are designed to not concern the owners, who can't make decisions for themselves in the first place. One step above an idiot light. The D2 maintains computer control of pulse width modulation to the gauge, making it 50% over a very wide range.

Hmm, my temp gauge never gets above smack dab in the middle. Sometime maybe even a little lower than that. I know these were common problems, so I keep an eye on it. Also has no signs of overheating, car takes roughly 5-10min to get up to operating temps and the like, no odd smells or smoke. ect.

Stop by a parts store and get a free code read with one of their better scanners, and you can see the coolant temp displayed.

yeah, I'm not sure he gets it. Basically without a OBDII scanner, you have no idea whatsoever how hot the engine is. You can overheat, blow a head gasket, and drop a liner and the stock gauge won't tell you anything.

The most common cause of overheating is probably gradual coolant loss. So even if its not overheating now, its just a matter of time until it does. Without a gauge that tells you, you won't know unless you regularly check the coolant level and even then you are only addressing one possible cause of several. Once you've done a head gasket or block replacement, you won't drive without a working gauge again. If you haven't done the head gasket, then get ready.
