Would love to have old style Volvo diesels with 4 bolt main bearings.... glad we don't have their darn timing belts. More Volvos and Jeeps in the salvage yard than Rovers..

Actually, 96-99 do have 4-bolt main bearings

My dad had a dealership when I was a teenager, Dodge, Mercedes, Volvo, Fiat - back in the 60's! So I was talking the wayback land, before Al Gore invented the internet...

Ill end up buying a motor to work on in the garage, there are several for sale. Seems cheap to rebuild.

yeah I get the problems. but the general public thinks they are blown up because most shops want to tell them that and say it needs a new motor. LOL

Not all LR "blown engines" are just head gaskets. I'm sure you've heard of slipped liners......more common with mid 99 thru 04 but they've also shown up in 96 thru 98's. Slipped liners will present loss of coolant like the head gasket. Cylinder 1,2,7 or 8 might be head gasket or they could be slipped liner. The only way you'll know for sure it's a slipped liner without doing a block pressure test or removing the head and checking the deck to liner surface is the spark plug/piston will be clean in any other cylinder than those four. You can get another liner tossed in but sometimes the bore has cracked.

The other issue is spun rod bearings. Seems to be a regular thing because these motors don't get the servicing they need. I put out feelers for another motor and 2 out of 7 needed crank attention. Let's say the journal is under mins and you need another crank, try and find a reasonably priced crank like you would for a SB 350.....

This isn't to say you can't snag an easy fixer up it's just to let you know the faults that can be hidden. I wouldn't even trust an add that spelled it out until I was sure it was just a hg......

I see em often on CL too and most probably are simple.

You can buy one from a salvage yard for like $149 (LKQ near me). They buy non-runners and park them on the lot for about 8 weeks, then crush what's left. Saw a guy cut the bumper off and the front cross member with a battery sawzall, used the yard rolling crane, had whole engine in like 30 minutes. I was still working on the seats...

On a recent episode of Top Gear (the real one) they chronicled the history of our brave little V-8. At one point they show the entire line-up of vehicles fitted with one variation or another of the all-allum terror. Based on what I saw there engines should plentiful and cheap.

As for my project, I did manage to pick up the heads today. In addition to inspecting, cleaning and decking the heads they installed the new valve seals and ended up setting a heli-coil also. They hot-tanked my valve covers too (which turned out great). Did everything for $195. Oh, they said the heads looked great...everything doing what it was supposed to be doing and couldn't believe I was at 168K.

You'll have it done in time for ice fishing (northern redneck excuse for drinking in the middle of the lake).
