Would be willing to bet that lots of things are changed, current motor has fuel injection, ECM, etc. Rover kept increasing displacement by removing more metal, etc. Seen lots of posts for replacing engines with used ones (perhaps from some dismantlers on this site), or dealers doing it for $10 - 17K. But wait for a few more responses. Meanwhile, before starting on that you may want to download the factory set of tech manuals (wiring, workshop, body, owners, etc.) - free link below.

BTW if you embark on this Buick crate engine project, please post some photos.

What exactly is wrong with the current engine that makes you want to replace the long block?

No, an old 215 will not be a direct bolt and play and cost $1000's plus if you were real creative much less depending on the year/model Disco you have.

there is nothing wrong with the motor in it now other than some piston slap, im just asking questions and trying to learn for future referece as from what i can tell on all these forums these arent the most dependable cars on the road, i really do like it , just looking for solutions to potental issues in the future.

If you got the bucks available, you could buy a used engine from another DI as close to yours as possible and go ahead and go thru it to prepare it as a future replacement if you were so inclined.
