Default Automatic Shift Problems

I have noticed that the signature "clunk" of the transmission on my '96 gas Disco is becomming more pronounced. Additionally, it appears as if the automatic tranny is having difficulty shifting. Now, as I accellerate to freeway speed, and approach 70 mph, the RPMs will exceed 3000 and only drop after I lift my foot ever-so-slightly off the accellerator pedal. Any thoughts?

As a complication, I am aware that my Catalytic Converters are bad and need replacing (on order). My truck has the tell tale rattling from the bad CCs. Is this problem somehow related to the shifting problem detailed above? When the CCs are replaced with the shifting issue go away?

I am the original owner of this Disco and it has nearly 100K miles. Gas, Automatic, SD.

Thank you in advance for all your help and insight.

MM
