1998 D1 spark plug and wire install
Ok, not much here in the search to help newbies like me so I'm adding this for posterity.
Last week I was getting some occasional pending P1316 misfire/emissions codes, but it never affected performance. Looked into it (found a lot of pieces here and there) and decided to replace my plugs and wires, so gathered my parts. Then this morning, driving into work at o-dark-thirty was faced with overwhelming engine stuttering, lack of power, and unable to drive faster than 13mph. ...hazards on, limped my way on the side of the road into work. Lots of pending trouble code alarms from the UG, but no codes ever given. I could hear a thump/popping sound resonating through my snorkel, and had a sound like a metal wire was dangling and slowly smacking metal - real faint. After about 5 miles it went away and I was back to full speed. Got back in after work, and drove it home without issue and got to replacing my plugs and wires.
Parts needed:
** 13/16 spark plug socket.
I got this from Advance Auto Parts for $15. This being my first tune-up, I appreciated the swivel and magnet to hold the plugs while I took them out and put them in. Buy Gear Wrench 13/16" x 6" Magnetic Swivel Spark Plug Socket 80547 at Advance Auto Parts
** Spark plugs.
Went with Bosch Platinums from Atlantic British...$3.95/ea. Heard good things so I went with it since they were on sale.
** Spark plug wires.
Went with 8mm Kingsborne based on good reviews around here, and they were cheap at $35. The fit in the OEM wire holders is tight, but they fit in there. IGN 789 Kingsborne Spark Plug Wires Ignition Wire Set - Kingsborne Ignition Spark Plug Wires Sets made in the USA
** Socket wrench.
Used the 3/8" ratchet from my mini Craftsman kit
** Torque wrench.
20NM or 15ft/lbs is what you're looking for
** Dielectric grease
** Antiseize
** 10" socket extension.
Not necessary, but definitely helpful
It also took me a while to find this diagram online, which is helpful:
Time: Took me about 2 hours. Went one plug and one wire at a time. Pay attention to the general plug orientation to make threading them in easier.
Here they are done:
Even cylinders
Odd cylinders
Not sure if it's the reason I was having problems, but spark plug #3 looked pretty beat. All the stock 7mm wires looked ok.
All in all it was a fun little project. Butt dyno says "moar powah!" but it always does. So far no codes and no misfires. Anyway, super-basic write-up but hopefully it'll help everyone else who's getting their hands dirty for the first time in the garage.

Yep, page 5 of the maintenance section of the D1 workshop manual, attached. Page 67 of 873. Reason I bring this up is that the RAVE is a great resource, and if you have it on your PC you are ahead of the curve.
Buzz likes yellow wires.
