2 issues pisssssing me off
1. I want to install an aftermarket CD player but I pulled the factory one out and it has 3 harnesses that clip into the radio, and it has one huge wire for the SUB and one huge wire for the AMP. On my aftermarket CD player it does not have a place to plug in these 2 huge wire's. Do I need a special adapter harness? what did you guys do with these 2 wires?.
2. The trailer plug on the rear hitch is a weird one!. I went to a trailer specific store to find an adapter so I can haul my dirtbike trailer and the guy said that it was a specialty adapter OR re-wire the wiring to a domestic common 7" round plug. Should I order it or just pull the wires and install a common plug?.

Trevor at RovahFarms has the trailer fix adapter really cheap. Look at the post I just did on the Electrical Parts.
I would bypass the Rover Radio Wiring completely. That's what I intend to do.

You beat me to it DL, I was just on Trevors site and saw the adapter. $6.99 can't go wrong.
i too was wondering about the AUX and SUB cables. I'm thinking these are antennas and you only need one. I know there is an adapter for the antenna since most of the receivers take different antenna connection. i'm also doing this and made the mistake of getting a receiver with only 1 power amp (2 plugs)...need one with 2 power amp connections (4 plugs) for the adapter to work. check out metra audio for another adapter; this is where i got mine...now just waiting to get a new receiver in the mail with the correct amp hookups.
Yeah. I don't really see the point of keeping the amp in the loop since you're replacing the head unit with a powered one. Take the extra hour, run the new wire to the speakers and never think about that amp again. That's what I'll do when I stop fixing broken stuff.
This might help. Rather than running new wires to speakers and tearing up the interior of the truck, it might be better to understand the output side of the amp and simply use the wires already in place to the speakers.
Here is a diagram of the rear of the head unit......

The wire with 13 pins hanging off the back goes to the CD player. The block-ish adapter with 26 pins carries the inputs from the instrument cluster and the outputs to the amps (front and rear). The third connection is the antenna.

And a diagram of the output side of the stock amp in a 1997 Discovery I...

Hope that helps.

I bought/use the adapter from rovahfarm. The diagram of what terminals to put which wires to did not work for me. I had to test each terminal with a multi-meter while running tail, turn, etc. to figure which wires went where.
But,that's pretty minor, quick, and works great now.

If you do just re-wire it, all you'll have to do is locate the wire loom comming out the floor(underside of car) in the rear going to the trailer plug. Inside that wire loom is only 4 wires. Figure which wire does which light, splice a 4-way flat in accordingly.
I almost did this until I found the adapter so cheap at rovahfarm.
