Default 300tdi running problems

Hello to everyone.

This is my first of many posts on this forum for my friend.

He has a 300tdi that has some running problems, Just wondering if you can help get the bottom of the problem.

The engine smokes upon start-up and seems like its missing on at least a couple of cylinders but when the vehicle becomes warm stops smoking and runs fine.

He has recently changed oil filter/fuel filter/ air filter/ alternator and water pump also has changed one faulty glow plug.

The car has done 140k and has passed the emissions about a month ago but the car is defiantly running worse.

Thanks in advance.

How long has he owned the truck?
Where does he live?
Whats the weather like where he lives?
is he using cheap fuel or a better brand of fuel?

Thanks for the reply,

He's had it for a couple of years, we both live in sunny northamptonshire so its not really dropped below 10c yet, He normally uses esso fuel and doesnt run it on chip fat etc.

He was saying its quite down on power, had a quick look the other day and one of the fuel return pipe from the injector is split so we are going to change that first. Its just the smoking and missing from start-up thats quite a bit problem to begin with.

I am betting is is a sensor problem, possibly the injection timing.

Hi all, I recently purchased a Disco 1 300TDI and in its history it was said to have had a engine change about 80k ago. I fitted a oil pressure gauge and found that the oil pressure was minimal,( only a few psi when hot) although the oil light always went out quickly. I have just fitted new crankshaft bearings and oil pump and now the oil pressure is good, showing 55psi when running and 25psi at idle.
The problem that I have is that it now smokes badly, worse when just started up and reducing a little after a couple of minutes. Before replacing the bearings etc it did not smoke, so I am assuming that oil is now getting to more places causing the problem.
There is considerable oil vapour out of the oil vent hose that leads to the inlet pipe to the turbo.
The engine starts and runs well except for this problem and there does not appear to be any difference in the way it runs, except that it is now smoother. The timing belt was replaced and it was rechecked several times.
I have read several threads about valve stem seals and have looked at the guide to valve stem clearance and that does not look excessive.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be would be helpful and I have already ordered a set of OEM valve stem oil seals.
