Default 300Tdi ABS failure

Hi,

We hit a flood too fast at the weekend (around a blind bend) and water is clearly causing problems. Later that day the ABS started to think that it should be ‘helping out’ – thus the system was operating and drilling back through the pedal on dry roads (certainly not wheel-locking conditions).

This meant that overall brake efficiency was awful and dangerous. However pedal pressure was always good and consistent and plenty of fluid/none apparently lost etc.

We had the AA check the system and they decided to disable the ABS at the pump (top of inner wing). This meant that the brakes operate fine but obviously no anti-lock. They also checked the 3 relays but these are located in the passenger footwell anyway so unlikely to be a coincidental failure. AA concluded that there was either water ingress at the pump (that may/may not dry out) or that one of the wheel sensors was wrecked and confusing the entire system.

The ABS’ own ECU appears to check the system out ok (slightly odd given the on-road traits). The dash lamp operates as it should with the system reconnected to the pump – lamp initially stays on up to 7mph and then goes out to indicate ‘no fault’ according to the books.

Also post-flood, there is a groaning/howling sound occasionally as a result of braking/steering (normally under significant lock). Slight vibration through the steering wheel that accompanies it. Initially thought it was a soaked belt but wonder if we also have water/muck in steering/CV boots etc. Hopefully not pump/rack. This has lessened suggesting, maybe, that it is drying out.

Land Rover state that the TestBook system is able to interrogate the ABS ECU for fault logs and the car is booked in for a thorough look. All the above occurred after the offending watery moment.

Anyone had anything similar? Parts prices look fierce.

Thanks.
