Default 4.6 upgrade?

I have a chance to pick up a 4.6 motor from a D2 to upgrade my D1 4.0.

The guy is offer the heads and the short block(with pistons, rods, crank, bearings, etc.) for $375. Im worried that the block and pistons are damaged.

He sent me the attached photos, any one have any thoughts? Should I be worried about the discolored area? He says its not a problem and shows the picture of the head with the spot of discoloration that matches the spot on the block.

Should I buy it?

Thanks

Later rover v8 blocks suck.

I'd buy it and put the crank, rods, pistons, etc in your 4.0 block.

You will have to convert it to a Gems motor to use it. IIRC the 97-99 P38 have Gems 4.6. Much easier swap

the price is right, my question would be why did he go to the bother of pulling it apart and cleaning it up and did not use it.

That's what I'm worried about. He said he got a good deal on a complete motor and ended up keeping the extra bits for back ups as it was cheaper not to replace the gaskets, head bolts, etc.

Sounds good. Weren't the 4.0 blocks and 4.6 made in the same factory? Is the problem that the tooling was so old by the 4.6 production that the blocks are no good?

A rover mechanic told he he sells his slipped liner blocks to these guys in the mid west that top hat the sleeves and ceramic coat the cooling cavities. Has anyone heard about the ceramic coating on the coolant cavities? What is the advantage?

Thanks.

All made in the same factory. Technically all of the 4.0 and 4.6 blocks are the same. There is some evidence that the 4.6 blocks in earlier years passed quality control better and that's why they were picked for 4.6 use. But all 03-04 in the US and Canada got a 4.6, so I doubt they could have been as picky in those years. The best engine block would probably be a 1996 or 1997, the first years for the 4.0/4.6. If I needed an engine for a d2 I'd look for a GEMS 4.6 range rover engine, and swap the stuff needed to make it a Bosch engine.
