Here is what I know:

* Calendars have consistent compression
* There is good spark at the coil and the spark plugs
* There is good fuel pressure a the fuel rail
* The plugs come out wet with fuel after turning the engine over a few times

It seems to be in time on a quick check. It just cranks and cranks with no fire at all. I have the manual on my iPad but can't find a good method of doing a good check to make sure the timing hasn't jumped.

What is the best way to check timing? Knowing that it has compression, spark and fuel is there anything else it could be?

I really don't know what else to check but can't afford to give up!

Can you elaborate on this? I would assume the distributor is good if it's sending spark to the plugs.

If you are getting fuel and a spark check your timing. What is your mileage/kms on the unit, it maybe your timing chain has stretched over time resulting in the timing progressively slipping out. Distributor can be worn, and timing chain can have slop, etc. Or just need fine tuning, need your timing light. Usually the reference marks are covered with oil sludge, will have to do some cleaning.

 

I am having the same problem with my 95 Disco. Strange thing is I checked all of the above mentioned, then it started. 2 days went by and now it is dead again, ran great when running . It cranks over no problem, just not even a hic up of starting. I started at the fuel pump and worked my way to the front and can't find a thing off. Today when it died the check engine light came on right before it quit. JohnBoy if I figure it out I'll let you know, if you beat me to it let me know. Crazy problem, and frustrating.

 

Well my problem is the fuel pump, I know because hitting it with a hammer starts the old girl. Must have worked enough to show me fuel pressure when I was checking. I guess I will change it out and hope for the best. Good luck with yours John.

 

The inertia switch is in series with fuel pump. Perhaps it needs to be firmly reset.

 

I thought about the inertia switch as well, clicked it many times going through things. Driving it home from where it last failed it cut out on me twice, but being in gear kicked it over and let me continue. Anything jumps out advice wise from that would be awesome! I figure a new pump isn't really a bad thing, might throw in a relay as well. This is the first problem I have had in 2 years, except a blown power steering hose...

 

If cutting off when driving, could also be Vehicle Speed Sensor; kills engine if it thinks you went past 114 mph. Can unplug to test, rebuild article in our tech area
