Default 95 Rover Disco

Attachment 15737

I bought this Rover 2 days ago and it was cosmetically neglected but mechanically sound after 132k on the odo. It seems the previous owner didnt care about appearance too much. The seats were in tater and the carpets as well as other leather/vinyl parts just dirty.

I spent the last 6 hours giving it a "car guy" detail. I say I am very happy with the results

Cosmetically neglected? 6 hr of detailing and mine still wouldn't look half that good. Looks like a damn nice truck to me! Crappy cosmetics just make it easier when you accidentally dent or scratch it off road

Not sure but it looks like 2-3"? Has 2457516 All Terrains on now. First upgrade will be larger tires and flares. Also want to get some large round running lights for the front bumper. Is the two pre-drilled holes on top for the lights?

Yep. But I would be concerned that internal neglect may have a strong link to lack of maintenance. Like fluid changes on the bottom side (swivels, diffs, transfer case, transmission), oil change at 5000 or less with a quality diesel rated oil (for extra cleaning), 15W40, never 10W30 (only good to 95F). Radiator flushed out, maybe rodded out by now. Poor maintenace schedule will have the internals looking like one of these.... the good looking one is Castrol - then changed to Rotella, and about 190K. The other - who knows?

Oil change w diesel rated oil? It is burning a bit of oil, not smoking but pipe is black. Will this help?

The diesel rated oils, like Shell Rotella, have extra chemicals to control soot (blow by) in diesels. It keeps the particles in suspension so filter can trap it. On the old school Buick engine in the Rover, which was invented when the standard was 1000 mile oil changes, there is plenty of gunk to trap. The oil also does a good job of cleaning out sludge over a period of time. Rover's manual says don't use 10W30 above 95 F. Well, that is a lot of the time if you figure slow in traffic, etc. 15W40 Rotella in modest climates, if in the ice belt 5W40 Rotella synthetic. The Rotella is inexpensive, has more ZDDP than many oils, which is also good for this flat tappet engine. Better to change oil early and often, just like voting in Chicago.

Normally blue smoke is for oil, white for coolant, and black for rich fuel mixture. Pipe could be black for more than oil.
