The oil also does a good job of cleaning out sludge over a period of time. Rover's manual says don't use 10W30 above 95 F. Well, that is a lot of the time if you figure slow in traffic, etc. 15W40 Rotella in modest climates, if in the ice belt 5W40 Rotella synthetic. The Rotella is inexpensive, has more ZDDP than many oils, which is also good for this flat tappet engine. Better to change oil early and often, just like voting in Chicago.

Normally blue smoke is for oil, white for coolant, and black for rich fuel mixture. Pipe could be black for more than oil.

I have no smoke just a black exhaust pipe.
Im in Pensacola FL what oil should I use? I think I will try the Shell Rotella first

re: Pensacola

Rotella and upgrade to a 180F thermostat. Flush and replace coolant. If rad is 10F cooler bottom vs top, look for an indy shop that can rod out the radiator. Rad is copper/brass, $700 or so. Aluminum with plastic tank model is $235. Rod out may only be $75. Don't trust the heat gauge.

Local shop here charges 50 bucks to pressure test and cook/rod out a copper/brass radiator. 200 is ridiculous

$200 is what a big shop charges someone based on vehicle MSRP. $75 cary in (u -pull) i more like it. I used a small two man shiop that is on the farm side of torwn, does tractors and construction equipment, the Rover tea cup is small potatoes to them.

My temp guage gets anywhere over half way and I freak. Haven't seen half way on the guage since a rodding and 180* stat. Runs a cool 179-192 depending on external temp and speed

all the small shops that used to do em have gotten rid of their equipt, said epa regulations got to be too much, the $200 is a shop in trenton that does tractor trailer sized and that is their small rad price i can;\'t even find a place in my area of va.

op definitly check everything over plugs wires etc and fluids, make sure what they said was done actualy was, rotella t 15-40 with a good filter LIKE mobil 1 ( there are other good ones cheaper) in the disco1 tech section there is whoe list of services you need to do and how to's, the black tail pipe is definetly from running rich at some point, ask questions this place is full of great guys and knowldge
