Default 96 Disco 1 overheating

Hey all, was hoping for a little troubleshooting help with my 96 Disco 1. The heat recently stopped working as well as usual which led me to investigate into possible reasons. First one that came up was coolant levels/overheating. Low and behold, while driving around the city today, my Rover started overheating. Safely back to my house, now it won't turn over at all (almost like the battery is dead, but it's not). After some research, it would appear my fan clutch has gone out. The engine is hot and the fan spins freely. Is it a safe assumption that it needs to be replaced and could be the cause of the overheating issue? Thanks for any and all help!

Fan clutch is probably a good start. As these trucks age over-heating become a more prevalent problem. There are lots of things to do but start with the cheapest and work your way forward. Bearing that in mind I would...
1. put a new T-stat in. It is a little strange that your "heat isn't working" and your truck is over-heating.
2. Get a real time data and code reader. Better info yield better analysis.

3. Fan clutch is likely toast if it is original. Can't hurt.
4. Flush cooling system. This could actually cause more problems by dislodging gunk and creating a blockage, but the truth is if this happens, it was bound to happen anyway.

Evaluate results after each step and let us know what worked.

all of what Walt said and I'd like to add that you may be low on coolant...thus not enough to circulate through the heater core to give you heat in the cab.....which means there may be a leak...flush and fill

I concur with all aforementioned items. I also add the one we don't like to talk about, the dreaded head gasket leak..... loss of coolant.

anyone else catch the part about not starting now? sounds like coolant is not the priority.
I do hope that is not the case but if it acts like the battery is dead but not - isn't that a froze block? (the REAL unmentionable)

Try turning the crank by hand. If I remember right it's around a 22mm or 24mm
