Default 96 Discovery Rear Wheel Drive Only...???

My front drive shaft almost broke off at the U-Joint, was able to remove drive shaft. I now would like to drive 2wd rear only until i get front shaft replaced.

Is this possible ?

The gearbox shifter is not budging, but once i get it moving which position should it be in to do 2wd rear?

You need the transfer case shifter to do back an to the left, the light on the dash should come on.

...right now it's back and to the right.
can't tell how far forward to move it to get it to move to the left.

You do not go forward it just goes left to lock the diff, forward is for neutral and low, you will probly need to remove the shifter to unsieze it

The CDL's on these trucks are notorious for rusting up and seizing. You might try hitting the linkage with PB blaster. Easier to do it from under the truck but you may indeed need to pull off the center console around the transmission and hit it from the top. Do a search, plenty of thread on stuck CDL's. Videos on youtube as well.

sometimes to lock the cdl you need to be moving. try putting the transmission in neutral and rolling the truck forward, then shift the diff lock lever into the locked position.

it's what i usually need to do with my 96.

Wish I had pics of my CD apart, left right motion pin was rusted solid into the shifter had to beat it out with hammer and brass drift

...next day after WD40, still could not move shifter to the left.
I did more reading and was able to use a 1/2" socket and turn it from underneath truck/on top of box, it turned pretty easy.
I now have 2wd rear wheel drive!!! until i get the ujoint and plate replaced.

Thanks all.

It does move easy at diff, the shifter on top of the trans is seized, remove console, remove shifter fix reinstall, there is padding etc around shifter spray lube is not getting to it, wd40 is nfg as break free IMO plus it dries and leaves a powder residue, I have to yell at cops all the time for using it on guns

Keep in mind that half of the drivetrain is not meant to talk all of the power all of the time. You'll be fine temporarily, provided you don't abuse the privilege. You might want to put off any long distance highway driving until you get it back together.
