None of the auto parts places around me including autozone rented that type of scanner. Would a voltmeter tell me if it was malfunctioning? Also I scanned it again and got codes saying there was a short circuit in the oxygen sensors upstream and an open circuit downstream. Does that mean all the 02 sensors are bad or what?

Yes you can check the temp sensor with a voltmeter.
If you have codes for the up stream O2's then you either need a tune up or new O2's.
Bad O2's can cause it to run rich, so can worn out spark plugs.
Worn out spark plugs can set off O2 codes.

Might be worth trying different wires then. I'll check the sender tomorrow with my voltmeter. What should the resistance be?

I have no idea what the resistance should be.
But I do know it will vary depending on temp.

Ok, so I need to measure it when the car is running? Dumb question maybe but I'm no electrician.

Ok the resistance with the car off was like 5.5k ohms with engine running 1.7k ohms. Now to find out what that means

Forgot to mention that the muffler is completely missing. I've read in passing that can affect mixture. Could that be part of the problem?
